FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our glass and windscreen specialists have compiled a list of some of our most frequently asked questions. You may find a solution to your problem here. Feel free to contact us at Maitland Glass & Windscreen service if you have any further queries.

  • Why should I use an Australian Glass & Glazing Association (AGGA) accredited glazier?

Our membership with the AGA is your assurance that our company is across all the latest information, including energy efficiency, compliance and Australian safety standards.

  • Is it illegal to drive a car with a cracked windscreen?

Yes, and you may be fined if you are pulled over by the police. A windscreen is only allowed to have any two of the following defects:

    • A hairline crack up to 30mm long
    • A crack from the edge up to 75mm long
    • A bullseye crack (looks like a star) crack up to 16mm in diameter

If your windscreen has any more damage, your vehicle will not pass its safety inspection. We can assess the damage to your windscreen and repair small cracks and stone chips. If your windscreen needs replacing, we will provide you with a competitively-priced quote.

  • What are the legal requirements for tinting vehicle windows?

Vehicles first registered in NSW on or after 1 August 1994 must have a minimum of 35% visible light transmission (VLT). Vehicle registered before that date must have a minimum of 35% unless a darker tint is already fitted.

A tinted band is allowed at the top of the windscreen but should not extend below the part of the windscreen that's swept by the wipers.

If you want tinting applied to your car, our team is well versed in the legal requirements for tinting in NSW. There are different laws that apply to utes, panel vans, trucks and buses that seat more than 10 passengers.

  • Do I have to be at home when you come to replace or repair my window?

Yes. We would appreciate if someone was available to let us gain access to your property.

  • What happens to the broken glass after a repair or replacement?

We will remove all dispose of all broken glass, leaving the job site clean and tidy.
